Andrea Pozza European Quintet: Gull's Flight

by AAJ Italy Staff
January 19, 2012

Orazio Maugeri - Andrea Pozza: Orazio Maugeri - Andrea Pozza

by AAJ Italy Staff
January 27, 2011

Quite apart from reminding us what a fine composer and arranger Enrico Rava is, The Words and the Days underlines just what a complete trumpeter he is. His sound is personal, yet imbued with the spirit of a century of jazz trumpeters before him. Throughout the twelve tracks his tone is warm and lyrical, colored by European classicism and the Italian love of melody. His playing is sparse at times, free and piercing at others, but always emotive. ...

If you look into the eyes of Enrico Rava as pictured on the cover of Easy Living (ECM, 2004), you will see a man totally at ease with himself and his musical career. Rava's seemingly effortless trumpet tone in all ranges pervades the music on that album with the warmth of the setting sun in the same cover photo, without neglecting the necessary intensity of all good jazz. The Words and the Days brings back the same ...

Enrico Rava Quintet: The Words and the Days

For some, jazz is an either/or: either it's deeply and clearly rooted in the American tradition, or it isn't jazz. What's not necessarily apparent with musicians seemingly distanced from that tradition is that it's an artistic choice that shouldn't be viewed as a lack of familiarity with the music's roots. Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava has spent a lifetime proving that jazz is an inclusive, rather than exclusive art form. There's plenty of room in the music for a broader view, ...
