Ben Markley: Ari's Funhouse
Gran parte delle esecuzioni si collocano entro l'estetica orchestrale mainstream, con arrangiamenti agili ed elastici, ricchi di svolte e caratterizzate da un palpabile groove. Le movimentate composizioni di Hoenig riflettono la sua statura percussiva e la swingante scrittura di Markley offre spazio ai singoli interventi, presentando innesti efficaci. Tra i solisti più in vista abbiamo i due leader al pianoforte e alla batteria più Peter Sommer al sax tenore, Greg Gisbert alla tromba (esemplare nell'elegante ballad "For Tracy"), Wil Swindler al sax contralto e Steve Kovalcheck alla chitarra. La chitarra hendrixiana di quest'ultimo caratterizza "Green Spleen," il sorprendente brano finale che attualizza le deflagrazioni timbriche ed i climi urlati e trascinanti del grande Don Ellis.
