In the capable hands of Toronto guitarist Dan Pitt and Vancouver pianist Noah Franche-Nolan, the self-titled debut from arid landscapes proves that ambient electroacoustic music need not be either precious or ponderous. Recorded across two sessions in November 2024, this ten-track collection is a work of atmospheric intelligence that knows the difference between space and emptiness.

The duo's jazz pedigree reveals itself not through overt displays of virtuosity (mercifully, there are no gratuitous cadenzas here) but in the sophisticated contouring of cyclical melodic lines and harmonic fluidity. Pitt's electric guitar, periodically processed through effects and live looping, creates sonic landscapes that shimmer and recede like heat mirages—an apt metaphor for an album titled as this one is.

The musicians occasionally generate fragmented themes that evolve, then dissipate, adapting the jazz musician's vernacular through electroacoustic improvisation. Franche-Nolan provides the gravitational center with piano and synthesizers that anchor without weighing down, processed through his own audio manipulations to create a seamless electroacoustic blend.

The opening track "Prelude" establishes the sonic palette with admirable economy, but it is in pieces like the haunting "Nova" and the sublime closing statement "The Optimist" where the full scope of their vision becomes apparent. The latter channels something of the luminous early work of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays—those weightless explorations where harmony became atmosphere. Like the long-form minimalism of The Necks or the electro-jazz soundscapes of Mark Isham, arid landscapes resists easy categorization, drawing equally from ambient music's contemplative traditions and experimental rock's gentler exponents.

"The Dust Storm" accentuates the duo's facility with overlapping ostinato as Pitt uses close-handed techniques via rhythmic chord voicings. Indeed, Pitt and Franche-Nolan understand structure as something more than the absence of beats.

What distinguishes this debut from countless other entries in the ambient-jazz-electroacoustic intersection is its refusal to coast on mood alone. It rewards both casual listening and closer attention—music that functions equally well as a contemplative backdrop or as the main event. Subtlety here is not the same as timidity; restraint, when exercised with intelligence, can be its own form of expressiveness.

There are times when the artists sound as if they are noodling and simply testing the waters. Yet the big picture is music that breathes rather than overwhelms. In sum, the album offers a generous and genuinely accomplished entrée into the duo's collaborative vision.
