Zacc Harris: American Reckoning

Americana originally developed from folk and country music, but in recent decades it has grown to incorporate other musical genres. For example, jazz artists such as Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny frequently incorporate elements of Americana into their work. With American Reckoning, guitarist Zacc Harris follows their lead, drawing from sources ranging from traditional folk songs and Stephen Foster compositions to Brian Wilson and Bob Dylan.

Harris, a Minneapolis-based guitarist and composer, established a reputation for his expressive guitar work and energetic live performances. Rather than relying on familiar jazz standards, Harris draws on material that proves equally well suited to jazz improvisation. American Reckoning continues Harris's exploration of American musical traditions, which he began on his 2017 release, American Reverie (Shifting Paradigm). Harris is joined here by bassist Matt Peterson and drummer Lars-Erik Larson, and the group offers an intelligent and heartfelt tribute to many familiar songs.

This concept adapts naturally to jazz. Drawing on material that ranges from traditional folk songs to modern classics, he reshapes each piece without losing sight of its original character. The resulting collection features traditional songs like "House of the Rising Sun" alongside "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys. His reinterpretations range in spirit from reflective to playful. Throughout the project, the musicians deliver performances well suited to each setting. Peterson and Larson interact seamlessly with Harris, creating performances that strike an appealing balance between structure and spontaneity.

Songs such as Stephen Foster's "Hard Times" and Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" evoke the understated atmosphere found in many of Ry Cooder's recordings. The guitar-driven melodies, along with the atmospheric accompaniment of the supporting musicians, lend an understated, haunting quality to each performance. The electric guitar improvisation on "I Shall Be Released" provides a feeling of hope and optimism.

With Dylan's "Masters of War,"  Harris offers a modernized reading of the original, which hints at its ongoing relevance. Here, he preserves the droning quality of Dylan's version with an emotionally powerful performance on acoustic guitar.

The music also varies dramatically in mood and style throughout the album. For example, "You Are My Sunshine" features a lively and danceable New Orleans-inspired jazz arrangement of this traditional melody. By contrast, Harris turns the traditional song "Darlin' Cory" into an all- out rocker, complete with a distorted guitar sound that seems closer to Magic Sam than to Pete Seeger.

Rather than treating these songs as museum pieces, Harris reimagines them as living works that continue to invite reinterpretation. American Reckoning succeeds because it honors the breadth of the American musical tradition while demonstrating how effectively these songs continue to thrive in a modern jazz setting.
