Album Description

The Night We Couldn't Say Good Night is 2019 debut album of Canadian jazz vocalist Angela Verbrugge, recorded in New York City with piano trio and released on NYC-based Gut String Records. Co- produced by bassist Cameron Brown, Verbrugge met him, Ray Gallon and Anthony Pinciotti through mentor Sheila Jordan, a year before journeying to Harlem to workshop the material. A lifelong vocal jazz fan and former actress, Verbrugge came to singing vocal jazz later in life. The album pays tribute to songs she spent her days sight-reading from old sheet music as a teen, but reveals that she learned more that melodies; she picked up an unusual ear for the cadence of jazz standard's poetry. Her 2019 album release reveals her as a talented lyricist; reviewers note a style rooted in the Cole Porter/Johnny Mercer/ Dave Frishberg tradition, yet totally her own. Co-producing the album (without having attended any formal vocal jazz education other than her classical piano training) pushed Verbrugge developed the music theory skills to realize her vision and aural imaginings. Working closely with Vancouver- based multi-instrumentalist Miles Black, San Francisco-based multi-instrumentalist Art Khu, album- pianist Ray Gallon and other mentors helped her to realize compelling arrangement ideas. The result offers listeners a bold statement with a variety of styles and dynamics, yet a through- line of cohesion featuring themes of new love, love lost, and the chaos of life. The album was positively reviewed by JazzTimes, JazzLives, MusicWeb International, Toronto Music Report and others. It received exclusive track premiere features on JAZZIZ, JazzWeekly and JazzTimes. The Night We Couldn't Say Good Night" received critical acclaim from worldwide radio producers, and it was featured on radio stations in Canada, the US, South America, Europe and Asia, including CBC Radio and Jazz FM (Canada), Fine Music 102.5 (Australia), New Jazz Radioh GmbH (Germany), Jazzmania (Mexico), Radio ARA (Luxembourg), One World Music Radio (UK) and WBGO (USA). The album charted on the Earshot charts in Canada and the Jazzweek charts in the United States, and was selected for several top 10 lists of 2019.
