WORLD-TOURING JAZZ VOCALIST, CANADIAN ANGELA VERBRUGGE TEAMS WITH NEW YORK CITY PIANIST RAY GALLON for her most intimate album-to-date. It explores the rhythmic possibilities of piano-voice duo over forgotten standards and new originals in a classic songbook style.

The set of duets with New York City pianist Ray Gallon includes five of her originals plus gems from Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Andy Razaf, Jimmy Van Heusen and others. Angela Verbrugge has become one of the “top vocalists on the current scene” (Scott Yanow) with vigourous international touring since 2021. She has made a strong impression as a composer within her first three records, and has quickly become one of the most important songbook style lyricists working today. She was nominated as Jazz Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards (2024) and has topped polls in both JazzTimes (2019) and All About Jazz (2024).

Blessed with a charismatic voice, the Vancouver Island-based vocalist has a wide range, appealing phrasing, a solid sense of swing, and the ability to dig deep into the lyrics having studied acting and piano before turning to jazz singing. She sings with the confessional feel of the cool jazz vocalists of the 50s, utilizing subtlety, good taste and wit, whether she is reviving forgotten songbook gems or introducing her own colorful originals.

For In the Wonder of the Night, Angela Verbrugge teams up with veteran Ray Gallon ((whose recent release Grand Company features Ron Carter/Lewis Nash) for an refreshing rhythmic approach to a duo album. The pair covers a more diverse territory than the usual duo projects (that typically rely on common standards, ballads and out-of-time interpretations). Verbrugge is heard in top-form in her latest accomplishment.
