Oddly Familiar Volume 1 is the first installment in Toronto-based pianist and composer Thompson Egbo-Egbo's Oddly Familiar series. The album introduces a collection of concise original compositions built around the classic jazz piano-trio format. Across eight tracks, Egbo-Egbo explores a range of contemporary jazz vocabulary, moving between relaxed swing, blues and gospel-inflected harmony, Latin rhythms, and groove-oriented compositions.
The Oddly Familiar series represents a different facet of Egbo-Egbo's work. Rather than centering on extended improvisations or reinterpretations of existing songs, these recordings focus on the composition itself: memorable melodies, concise forms, rhythmic clarity, and an inviting sense of atmosphere.
