Album Description

Recorded during the isolation and uncertainty of the global pandemic, What Remains features nine tracks exploring personal exploration of transition, resilience, loss and the possibility of renewal.

Through a blend of contemporary post-bop, Latin jazz, funk, and reimagined rock, Toronto-based pianist and composer Thompson Egbo-Egbo expands the traditional piano-trio format with longtime bandmates Randall Hall and Jeff Halischuk. The album captures a trio whose musical language is rooted in jazz but open to a wide range of contemporary influences.

What Remains emerged during a period when live music and normal creative routines had largely disappeared. Therefore, the album carries a different kind of intimacy in that its music reflects the experience of being forced to pause, reassess what matters, and imagine what might come next — not by ignoring what was lost, but by asking what remains after everything has changed.
