Album Description
With A New Standard, Toronto pianist and composer Thompson Egbo-Egbo takes a simple but provocative idea and makes it the organizing principle of the album: What constitutes a jazz standard today? Rather than treating the standard repertoire as a closed canon, Egbo-Egbo places familiar jazz compositions alongside songs by Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Laura Mvula, and others, approaching each through his own musical language.
The arrangements are neither straight covers nor exercises in genre translation. "Exit Music (For a Film)" recasts Radiohead's dark, atmospheric song as an expressive jazz performance, while "My Favourite Things" takes yet another direction, beginning with considerable restraint before expanding into a dramatic, almost orchestral climax.
Throughout the album, the trio maintains a strong sense of swing and rhythmic momentum without sacrificing the character of the original melodies. Egbo-Egbo's playing combines the vocabulary of traditional piano jazz with a contemporary harmonic and rhythmic sensibility, allowing the music to move naturally between hard bop, gospel, soul, rock, and modern jazz.
The result is an album less concerned with preserving the boundaries of the jazz canon than with questioning them. In that sense, Egbo-Egbo's "new standard" is not a replacement for the old one. It is an invitation to keep expanding it.
