Album Description
Man Behind the Camera is an original solo piano album by Ukrainian-Canadian composer and pianist Taras Luka, created as a contemporary live score for Dziga Vertov’s groundbreaking 1929 silent film Man with a Movie Camera.
The music brings together cinematic composition, contemporary classical language, jazz influences, and improvisation. Written to interact directly with Vertov’s rapid visual rhythms and experimental editing, the score also exists independently from the film as a complete musical work.
Produced by the Ukrainian film studio VUFKU and filmed in Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv, Man with a Movie Camera is one of the landmark works of the Ukrainian avant-garde and was named the greatest documentary of all time in Sight & Sound’s 2014 poll.
Luka performs the score live alongside screenings of the film as part of his ongoing live-cinema project. The project has toured Canada and the United States, including sold-out performances in New York at the Theatre 154, and received an award at the 4th Dimension Independent Film Festival in Bali.
Man Behind the Camera was released on July 30, 2026. All music is composed and performed by Taras Luka.
