Taras Luka is an award-winning Ukrainian- Canadian composer, pianist, accordionist, music director and live-cinema artist based between Vancouver and New York. His work moves between jazz, contemporary classical music, theatre and film, combining composition with improvisation and live performance. Luka has performed internationally across Canada, the United States and Europe. His orchestral work Choral(e) of Freedom received its world premiere in Italy at Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Teatro Verdi in Pordenone under conductor Oksana Lyniv. In Canada, his performances have included the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, North Shore Jazz, Jazz at the Bolt and other major cultural events. His jazz album Part of the Journey was released in 2023. His more recent album, Man Behind the Camera (2026), features his original piano score created for Dziga Vertov’s landmark 1929 silent film Man With a Movie Camera. Luka’s live-cinema project Man With a Movie Camera combines Vertov’s film with an original score performed live at the piano, creating a contemporary dialogue between Ukrainian avant-garde cinema, composition and improvisation. The project has toured across Canada and the United States, including two sold-out performances in New York, and received international recognition at the 4th Dimension Independent Film Festival in Bali. In October 2026, Luka was selected to participate in the VIFF Amp Music in Media Summit in Vancouver. He will also appear as a Guest Artist at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in New York, presenting his work in live film scoring and discussing his creative process. Alongside his live-cinema work, Luka continues to compose and perform music for theatre, film, jazz ensembles and orchestral projects, developing a musical language shaped by Ukrainian cultural heritage, contemporary composition and improvisation.
