Album Description

Cutting edge flutist Elsa Nilsson (SE/US) and next generation vibraphonist Martin Fabricius (DK) proudly present the recording of their first intense musical meeting, set to be released on April 11th 2025.

Experience these two improvisational masters engage in a deep wordless conversation. The creation of Glaciers is happening in real time, unedited, as a sonic blend of acoustic and electronic timbres, melodies and soundscapes. It resounds with urgency and serenity.
A musical meditation, honest and daring.

The duo first met in 2017 at JazzAhead, a music fair in Bremen. In their very first conversation, the words “we should play together” were spoken. After that, they continued their conversation over email or whenever their paths would cross in the physical world and finally, 5 years after meeting for the first time, they met with instruments in hand, in a newly built concert hall on the outskirts of Copenhagen. They had a recording setup and two days to their disposal. No music was written or discussed before the record button was pushed and so, through the language of free improvised music, their year long conversation took to a deeper level.

Brooklyn-based Swedish flutist, Elsa Nilsson’s work engages high-level improvising and layered, cinematic orchestration; her artistry, an earnest and actionable desire to collaborate with multimodal artists and the changing world around her. With six praised albums out as a leader and collaborations with artists like Bill Frisell and John Cowherd, she is truly a rising star. In 2018 she was the winner of the National Flute Association’s Jazz Flute Competition, and the recipient of multiple Chamber Music America grants, including a 2022 New Jazz Works grant for Band of Pulses. Elsa holds a master of music from NYU. She has served as a professor at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music since 2020.

Martin Fabricius of Copenhagen Denmark, a former student of Gary Burton, is a leading exponent of a new generation of vibraphonists, known for his exploration of electronics, new repertoire and innovative playing techniques. Drawing on Burton’s pianistic 4-mallet approach, Fabricius has pushed the boundaries of the instrument, constantly seeking to expand its expressive possibilities. He has eight critically acclaimed albums out as a leader. His collaborations include work with prominent artists such as Steve Swallow, Tomasz Stanko (The Scandinavian Art Ensemble), Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Jimmy Haslip (Neff Irrizary). Martin graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music (1996) with a degree in film scoring.
