From Kim –
The title Fling the Doors Wide arrived unexpectedly one recent evening while watching a movie. Embedded in a character's line, it was like a firework exploded in my head. THAT WAS IT. And not only was that the album title, but that was the "title" of what I was looking for in my life at that particular time. I was feeling incredibly uninspired and needing something. That something was to "fling the doors wide." Let fresh air blow into my life, and blow me open. And to have the metaphorical doors wide open so things could fly in that were outside my usual sphere. And so, I went into the recording studio with the intention of flinging the doors wide. Thus, my new album was born.
The compilation definitely has a 1960s vibe to it, through song selection, arrangement, and, literally, the Vibes, thanks to Susan Pascal. Everything from Mose Allison (complete with the Rhodes) to the haunting "When I Look in Your Eyes" from Doctor Dolittle. I've also got a Shirley Horn tune in there and a few Latin tunes one could actually label as "groovy." It's a highly nuanced album, complete with deep pocket grooves as well as places for the heart to swell.
I didn't want to have too many arrangements set in stone when we got into the studio, I wanted the musicians to have free rein over the feel and solos. We framed the form and then let it play out. John Hansen laid down his classic bebop rhythms, and the band followed suit with Chris Symer and Matt Jorgensen laying down the grooves. To have the dynamic Travis Ranney on sax and the magical sounds of Susan Pascal on vibes was a real treat.
