Album Description

For the SIXTH (wow!) installment in their Plus One series, Evening Sky invited saxophonist John McKenna to join them in their Rhode Island studio. McKenna spent years on the NYC jazz scene playing with the likes of Larry Goldings, Joe Lovano, Bill Stewart, Tootie Heath, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Red Rodney. He has released albums with his quartet and has created compositions and improvisations with modular synthesizers. McKenna’s horns (tenor and soprano saxophones) provide a sweet contrast to the quartet’s guitar-heavy sound.

For this recording, guitarist Gino Rosati, drummer Eric Hastings, and John McKenna all contributed original compositions - which early listeners have described as the most jazz infused Evening Sky release to date. The result is a mix of John Scofield inspired soul jazz (“Hot Mess,” “Basement Groove”); tight bebop (“Match Point”); cheerful, upbeat Hi-Life (“Absolutely”); and two searching Metheny-esque compositions (“Once Around The Sun,” “Trinity’s Rainbow”).
