The third “Plus 1” release from Evening Sky spotlights Ben Shaw’s compositions and tenor saxophone supported by the quartet’s unusual instrumentation. Tunes range from the moody to the frenetic, with a bolero thrown in for good measure. Rosati’s guitar plays hot and cool; Brooks’s steel guitar lays down subtle chordal soundscapes. Propelled by the rhythm section of Hastings and Potenza, Ben Shaw’s playing here shows influences of John Coltrane, Mark Turner and Charles Lloyd—but is always his own.
