Caribbean Jazz Project: Afro Bop Alliance

Fra i più interessanti vibrafonisti contemporanei c'è di sicuro Dave Samuels. Ha cominciato ad incidere con Gerry Mulligan finendo alla ECM con il progetto Double Image e con un'incisione, ristampata su CD, insieme ad Art Lande e Paul McCandless. Successivamente ha trovato una sua strada in contesti di fusion come gli Spyro Gyra e con la banda di genere latino Caribbean Jazz Project, fondata insieme al sassofonista contralto Paquito De Rivera ed il percussionista Andy Narell, progetto che poi ha guidato da solo, alla grande, dopo la scelta degli altri due di seguire altre vie.

I successi non sono mancati, fra cui una nomination al grammy, e se c'è chi pensa che vada tutto a scapito della qualità artistica bisogna subito precisare che la musica di questa band è molto raffinata ed elegante dal punto di vista armonico e degli arrangiamenti, lontana anni luce dal genere latino che si ascolta alla radio troppo spesso. Un paio di standard interpretati spendidamente, "Naima" su tutti, danno subito l'idea dell'alto livello tecnico, senza per questo trascurare i brani di Monk, Dizzy Gillespie e "Stolen Moments" di Oliver Nelson.

Sono in pochi a saper affrontare la musica 'latin' con questa bravura esecutiva, al di là dei soliti schemi che fanno ballare il pubblico.
