Cynthia Felton: Afro Blue - The Music of Oscar Brown Jr.

Ormai anche per le autoproduzioni si fanno le cose in grande, basta dare uno sguardo ai tanti protagonisti che accompagnano Cynthia Felton. Altro che musicisti da studio! Qui ci sono, coinvolti di volta in volta in brani resi famosi da Oscar Brown Jr., nomi importanti di quello che è il jazz contemporaneo, impegnati a rendere efficaci gli arrangiamenti raffinati della cantante, a dare un´impronta precisa a brani più che noti al pubblico degli appassionati.

Con tanta bella compagnia Cynthia Felton non può che rendere al massimo delle sue possibilità vocali, non sempre di tipo jazzistico, va da sè viste le premesse del titolo del disco. Tuttavia ha delle qualità da leader che mette subito in evidenza nello spiritual che apre l´incisione, accompagnata soltanto dal violino di Lesa Terry. Un inizio minimalista, cui segue subito dopo un disco dall´aspetto esuberante, in cui cambiano di continuo i musicisti e che fa buon uso di questa abbondanza di possibilità. I colori vengono gestiti per dare il giusto aspetto ai brani, ricchi di swing o vicino alla tradizione soul, in ogni caso sempre coinvolgenti. Non c´è niente di superfluo o di forzato, tutto scorre leggero e arioso in un lavoro che ha in ogni brano dei motivi di interesse.

Da quello che si ascolta, spesso involontariamente, alla radio, sembra sia impossibile oggi fare ancora una musica pop di alta qualità; Cynthia Felton dimostra invece che è vero il contrario. Il suo progetto ha dovuto però pubblicarlo sulla sua Felton Entertainment.
