Yaron Herman: A Time for Everything

Primo disco in trio per il giovane pianista israeliano - ma attivo sulla scena francese - Yaron Herman, bene assecondato da Matt Brewer al contrabbasso e da Gerald Cleaver alla batteria. La musica di A Time for Everything si inserisce a pieno titolo in un filone ormai abbastanza battuto, quello [con le dovute differenze pensiamo al trio EST o ai Bad Plus] che muove dalla tradizione del piano trio per innestarvi modalità ritmico espressive più vicine al rock e alla popular music.

In questo processo, la presenza di composizioni pop-rock [più o meno celebri] che vengono rilette accanto a qualche originale, a classici del jazz o a brani di musica classica [gettonatissimi i compositori del primo Novecento] sembra un dato quasi irrinunciabile e Herman non fa certo eccezione.

Il disco si apre con "Army of Me" di Bjork e si chiude con la ormai abusata "Hallelujah" di Leonard Cohen [canzone meravigliosa e già miracolata dalla rarissima possibilità di una "seconda vita" nell'interpretazione di Jeff Buckley], ma in mezzo c'è ecumenico spazio anche per un preludio di Scriabin, per "Message in a Bottle" dei Police e anche - avanti c'è posto - per la Britney Spears di "Toxic", mentre a rappresentare la categoria "standards" c'è, un po' come quando a Sanremo compare Peppino di Capri, "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning".

Con l'idea è che qualsiasi cosa può essere materiale per riarrangiare e improvvisare, si muove per forza parallela quella che alla fine la "fonte" tematica non è così importante: è così? Si tratta invece di un modo per rendere più comunicativa la musica a un pubblico più giovane? Pare davvero strano che un musicista intelligente e dotato come Herman - e con lui i suoi compagni - pur cresciuto a Bjork e Police, non si renda conto di quanto impoverente sia dare un vestito jazz a quei temi.

Tanto più che le composizioni originali non sono niente male, scorrono leggere e funzionali alla bella mobilità del trio [la ballad "Neshima", ma anche la più tradizionale "Stompin" o la ipnotica "Paluszki"], rivelando Herman come un pianista tutt'altro che banale.

"Un tempo per qualsiasi cosa" dice il titolo del disco, forse in attesa di un tempo per le cose migliori, che sono nelle corde del musicista israeliano.
