Virginia Mayhew Septet: A Simple Thank You

Un grazie a tutti, è questo il titolo che la sassofonista Virginia Mayhew ha scelto per il nuovo CD, il quinto a suo nome, con la nuova band, un settetto piú un paio di ospiti: la percussionista Mayra Casales e la trombettista Ingrid Jensen. La sezione ritmica con cui lavora di solito è rimasta la stessa, ma a rendere i brani dal sound piú robusto ha scelto di integrarla con una sezione fiati.

Il disco si sviluppa in modo festoso, swingante, con brani per lo piú scritti dalla sassofonista e un "Rhythm-a-ning" monkiano, lungo i punti fermi di quello che è il modern mainstream, con ritmi cangianti, assoli trascinanti, la bossa nova, profumi latini.

La musica è ben eseguita e grintosa, ed anche ricca di personalità grazie ad arrangiamenti precisi che fanno sembrare il tutto eseguito da una big band, con solisti di valore. La scrittura della Mayhew ha modo di metterli tutti in evidenza nel migliore dei modi. Lei è molto brava a dare un nuovo volto a composizioni altrui, ad esempio il "Rhythm-a-ning" monkiano trasformato in un ritmo fra il funky ed il calypso, ma anche a lavorare sulle proprie immettendovi elementi nuovi, come la "Sandan Shuffle" finale, che è anche il titolo del suo CD precedente.

È un piacere ascoltare gli assoli di Ingrid Jensen e le percussioni latine di Mayra Casales ad ampliare l
