PUI4: A Pearl In Dirty Hands

Più volte negli ultimi Nicola Guazzaloca ha lavorato in Portogallo, sia esibendosi con compagni italiani (come nel caso del duo con Edoardo Marraffa, documentato in Em Portugal!), sia collaborando con artisti locali, come in questo A Pearl In Dirty Hands dei PUI4, quartetto che lo vede a fianco dei portoghesi Joao Pedro Viegas al clarinetto basso, Carlos Alves "Zingaro" al violino e dell'uruguayano Alvaro Rosso al contrabbasso.

Formazione piuttosto atipica, dunque, priva di batteria, con due archi e uno strumento ligneo dal suono scuro, adatta perciò a una meditazione sui suoni qual è quella espressa dai quattro musicisti, tutti adusi alla composizione istantanea anche se taluni con formazione e frequentazione classiche (come nel caso di "Zingaro" e Rosso).

Le dieci tracce di cui si compongono i cinquantatre minuti dell'album hanno infatti un impianto cameristico e sono tutte condotte con bassa intensità dinamica e ritmi lenti -sebbene non manchino occasionali "strappi," come nel caso della parte finale di "Soon It's Late," ove tutti accelerano vistosamente i tempi, o della conclusiva "Left Clefts," ove a farlo in modo nervoso è soprattutto il pianoforte. L'interazione è totalmente paritetica, anche se spesso risalta il lavoro del violino di "Zingaro," artista con una lunga esperienza nell'improvvisazione e collaborazioni con musicisti come Joëlle Léandre, Peter Kowald, Paul Lovens, Dominique Pifarély. Ciascuno dei quattro musicisti opera sui dettagli e le sfumature sonore, senza aver per guida né una traccia, né una leadership; l'attenzione è incentrata soprattutto sulle dinamiche che dal silenzio portano al "piano," cosicché i suoni paiono spesso scaturire dal niente e addensarsi lentamente, fino a comporre uno spontaneo progetto complessivo.

Disco che richiede attenzione -soprattutto ai suoni, peraltro nitidissimi -e una certa "immersione" nel processo evolutivo della musica, approcci tuttavia facilitati dalla relativa brevità dei brani, che oscillano tra i tre e sette minuti.
