Reggie Washington: A Lot of Love, Live! (My Trios)

A Lot of Love, Live! testimonia due differenti esibizioni live in quel di Bruxelles di due inediti trii del bassista Reggie Washington. Nella registrazione del marzo 2006 troviamo il 'trio americano' con Ravi Coltrane al sax tenore e Gene Lake alla batteria, in quella datata ottobre 2005 sono invece gli europei Erwin Vann e Stephane Galland ad affiancare l’eclettico bassista già membro di formazioni blasonate quali i Five Elements di Steve Coleman ed il quartetto di Oliver Lake

Ad un attento ascolto risultano abbastanza evidenti le differenti sensibilità interpretative dei due ensemble che pure sono stati strategicamente miscelati per dare l’idea di unicum, di musica che annulla distanze geografiche e stilistiche. Se lo spiccato senso ritmico, la sapiente miscela di groove acustico ed elettrico, di influenze funky e di aggiornato linguaggio bop e la felice vena compositiva di Reggie Washington si possono considerare il collante della registrazione, appare interessante l’approccio assolutamente personale delle due formazioni.

Laddove il sax di Ravi Coltrane è aggressivo, irruento, spigoloso, a tratti ruvido, il tenore di Vann non può prescindere da una certa morbidezza europea che sconfina, in “This One“, in un lirismo meditativo di tipo nordico. E se le percussioni di Lake frantumano la scansione ritmica e accentuano un continuo gioco ad elastico della pulsazione, quelle di Galland, pur essendo mobilissime e assai dinamiche, prediligono una azzeccata coloritura timbrica.

Disco ricco di energia, con alcune composizioni gradevoli e una rilettura della classica “Fall“ di Shorter piuttosto originale, con la struttura armonica ridotta all’essenziale ed il tema proposto sottoforma di mantra incantatorio.
