In 88 Fingers Katsenelenbogen riversa, dominandola, una materia ampia e sfuggente senza approdare ad un risultato definito. Ragtime, romanticismo euroclassico, Legrand, vena latina, Rachmaninoff e linguaggio postbop sono alcune dei tratti salienti di questo CD.

Ci troviamo di fronte ad una prova in solitudine, muscolare e virtuosistica, dove però non si registrano impennate di fervida ispirazione. Complice un repertorio di noti standard scelti con astuzia, il disco scorre fluido grazie ad una magistrale tecnica pianistica infiorata da variopinte concezioni armoniche.

Katsenelenbogen non ha la statura di un Art Tatum e Oscar Peterson per giustificare del tutto un progetto così ambizioso ed enciclopedico, attraverso cui filtrare la propria identità stilistica. Domina nel disco la superba tecnica, ma non l'inventiva, che per intenderci, possano rendere un musicista immediatamente riconoscibile. Gli ascoltatori potranno rifarsi con un fraseggio pianistico disinibito, armonicamente e ritmicamente enciclopedico.
