Bill Laswell - Pharoah Sanders: With a Heartbeat
Che debba anche diventare il concetto-base per molte realizzazioni sonore di Bill Laswell e i suoi collaboratori fidati, e' un problema.
Nel senso che confidando sulla semplicita' dell'"heartbeat" come cellula ritmica primigenia, Laswell prosciuga la sua creativita' affidandosi ad un'idea seriale di ritmo e melodia, buona per ogni evenienza.
Lo spettro sonoro limitato ma affascinante, che descrive molte delle opere laswelliane rivolte all'analisi della cosiddetta ambient, sembra abbia dato il massimo dei risultati.
Cosi', questo With a Heartbeat si limita a replicare atmosfere ampiamente visitate nel passato.
Sfrutta voci strumentali assolute, in primis quella del tenore di Pharoah Sanders, subito autorevole in "Across Time", declina lentamente il tempo della meditazione sonora, avvolge con tappeti iterativi di tastiere e percussioni, ma confessa una evidente poverta' di elaborazione improvvisativa.
La musica si mantiene allora carezzevole, rassicurante, senza mai graffiare. Il sound del basso elettrico di Laswell, spesso cosi' profondo, si riduce qui a simulacro di se stesso.
Anche l'estroversione di Trilok Gurtu diventa cliche' in "Alankara", riproposizione di onomatopee risapute.
L'ultimo "heartbeat", "Gamaka", vivacizza un po' la raccolta, con Graham Haynes in vena di esotismi, alternanza di ritmo scandito e oasi sospese, con flautini di contorno e sitar obbligatorio.
Persa per strada la forza massiccia dei Material, l'abilita' del remixing su materiali altrui ed il mistero inquietante di tante incisioni Axiom, Laswell segna il passo.
Speriamo in un prossimo disco piu' sostanzioso.
