Sundar: What a Dream I Had...

Oltre alle tante cantanti in giro per i palcoscenici c'è pure qualche collega maschio che prova a attirare su di sè l'attenzione dei riflettori. Prendiamo ad esempio Sundar, artista di origine indiana cresciuto in Canada, che con una raccolta di standards si presenta all'attenzione del pubblico.

In What a Dream I Had... troviamo un mix di brani moderni, di Carly Simon e del cantante folk canadese Gordon Lightfoot, oltre che brani brasiliani ("A Felicidade" e "Fotografia") e alcuni evergreen. Il patrimonio degli standards fa da ispirazione a Sundar, che oltre ad ispirarsi al canto di Chet Baker o Johnny Hartman è pure un polistrumentista: ad esempio nei brani di Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinicius De Moraes si fa ascoltare al flauto, altrove è molto bravo nell'uso dei sassofoni contralto e soprano.

Una delle note caratterizzanti del disco è l'ecletticità, sia per la diversità dei compositori che per l'attitudine del gruppo a farsi guidare da indirizzi piú moderni ("I Remember You," alla Kurt Elling, ad esempio) insieme ad altri più tradizionali. Il trio che fa da ritmica segue bene l'interessante voce del leader e rende il disco molto gradevole. Anche questo, insieme alla pertinenza di tutti gli interventi solistici, è un pregio, chi cerca l'oroginalità a tutti i costi dovrà rivolgersi altrove.
