Joe Zawinul & the Zawinul Syndicate: Vienna Nights
Se la grandezza dei Weather Report stava nel bilanciamento tra le forti personalità dei suoi membri, ognuno apportatore di una propria personale concezione della musica d'assieme, che ha reso quell'avventura unica e irripetibile, il tastierista austriaco col suo nuovo gruppo non è più riuscito a raggiungere quelle vette assolute, pur percorrendo un cammino non privo di fascino e soddisfazioni.
Il ritmo e le voci sono ancora le basi principali della world music secondo Zawinul, con le tastiere a cementare il tutto e a dividersi lo spazio solistico con gli altri strumenti (in prevalenza chitarre). Col tempo l'impiego dell'elettronica si è ridimensionato, soprattutto gli effetti di filtro alle voci che hanno così ritrovato la loro naturalezza (ma il vocoder non è affatto sparito) e aumentato la presenza complessiva, evocando principalmente scenari africani senza dimenticare il mondo arabo-andaluso.
Questo doppio CD raccoglie alcuni brani registrati nel 2004 al Birdland di Vienna, locale fondato dallo stesso Zawinul, con due diverse formazioni del Syndicate, e pur non aggiungendo gran che di nuovo alla discografia esistente rappresenta un discreto excursus sulla produzione attuale del musicista austriaco, chiudendo in bellezza con uno sguardo al suo glorioso passato con la triade "Three Postcards", "Badia" e "Boogie Woogie Waltz".
