Tiffany Austin: Unbroken
Austin beautifully expresses her personal views and positive responses to the past and current atrocities committed against African American citizens in the United States. According to Austin, the title Unbroken "is a celebration of the resilience of the African American spirit and musical lineage. I want the album to be a balm for people who feel discouraged in these times, by reminding them of the power and enduring spirit of those who came before."
The new disc opens with "Blues Creole (For Amede)" dedicated to Amédé Ardion, (March 11, 1898— November 3, 1942), an innovative Louisiana songwriter, musician and vocalist credited with leading the development of Creole and Zydeco music. After a show one night, the popular artist was attacked by a racist mob and seriously injured.
The vocal composition "Greenwood," is a stylishly performed song with a razor-sharp political/social commentary. The track title comes from the prosperous African American community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that was leveled in 1921 by angry mobs supported by local authorities. The air and land pogrom of the "Black Wall Street" was considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in US history. Austin's musical treatment of these historical events reflects a social vision and musical maturity.
Austin balances her conscious viewpoint with a jubilant interpretation of the Charles Mingus classic "Better Git It In Your Soul," the inspirational "The Blessing" and other encouraging selections. The sensuous "King Of Pleasure" speaks for itself.
Unbroken closes with Austin's version of the traditional gospel standard "Keep Your Eyes On The Prize," popularized during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. The vocalist commented, "I hope that the music brings some joy and hope to listeners." The album is a resounding success on this front.
Tiffany Austin composes and sings with a clear voice and soulful eloquence that speaks volumes about the strength and endurance of the human spirit.
