Ona: Traces of Brazil Voices of Toronto

Jazz-classical crossovers are not so unique, but they can still mesmerize with their fluidity and breadth of sound. Traces of Brazil, Voices of Toronto by the Ona Ensemble is a short yet robust selection of tunes. Their style of Brazilian chamber jazz is not in your face; rather, it sits back and lets the listener glide in and unwind.

"Oná" is a Yoruba word meaning "New Path," and the blend that the group has created shows this with aplomb. Two French horns, flute, percussion, bass, guitar, bassoon, sax and clarinet make for a delightful, often surprising, sound. "Pro Olmir" lays the groundwork for what is to come. The style is sleek but a little dirty, too, like a dimly lit bar in the basement of a building. The warmth of the layering of musical lines is what sets the group apart. Like the Michigan-based band Aguankó, this seven-player ensemble celebrates the rhythms and tunes of Brazil without seeming gimmicky; they instead retain a sense of individuality and interpretation.

Though all the compositions are originals by guitarist Andre Valerio, they are reminiscent of bossa nova tunes. Though the chamber sound can come off stronger at times, that does not negatively impact the overall enjoyment. "Do Seu Olhar" is a quiet piece that leans heavily into a classical bent, somewhat 20th-century French style (perhaps Poulenc). "Sambado" offers a wonderful groove in the guitar lines. The backing instruments keep their distance, giving enough support, and then they switch seamlessly. Though they only formed in 2024, their ability to move and shift about one another is applaudable. As with any good orchestra, Oná shares the stake, highlighting little moments through different musicians.

Traces of Brazil, Voices of Toronto serves as a reminder that music is for everyone. We share a dialogue, culturally and sonically, when artists bring together various styles and genres, expanding what we already have near our eardrums. The only drawback is that Oná didn't add in anymore material. A few covers would have also strengthened the ties to Brazil or even to other Hispanic and Latin countries. The tunes on the release exhibit warmth and finesse. There is much to savor here, and there is much to look forward to with this young group.
