Tim Jago: Time Shift
Some artists aim for a signature sound by adhering closely to genre conventions. Guitarist Tim Jago takes a different approach. Drawing deeply from the jazz tradition, Jago forges a unique path that blends personal expression with reverence for his influences. With his debut solo release, Time Shift, the Australian-born, New York-based guitarist delivers an album that is both compositionally daring and emotionally grounded. Supported by a top-tier ensemble and a clear artistic vision, Jago presents a collection that is accessible and richly rewarding.

From the opening title track, the album declares its intentions. A bold groove shifts unexpectedly into faster territory while maintaining its central motif, mirroring the theme of life's unpredictability suggested by the album's title. Jago is joined by a stellar group of collaborators: Mark Small on saxophone, Martin Bejerano on keys, Dion Kerr on bass, and David Chiverton on drums. Their chemistry is unmistakable. This is not a session band but a collective with deep roots, and the seamless interplay reflects years of musical conversation.

Jago's tone is one of the album's defining features: warm and articulate, alternately crystalline and biting, always intentional. Whether navigating the rhythmic complexities of "Calypso'ish" or the layered spiritual terrain of "Soil to Sky," he plays with the sensitivity of a storyteller. On the contemplative "Major," inspired by his childhood in rural Western Australia, he explores open harmonic spaces with lyrical phrasing that prioritizes clarity over flash.

The album includes two standards,"Bernie's Tune" and "Body and Soul," but these are far from familiar fillers. Jago reinvents each with syncopated hits and subtle rhythmic complexity, offering fresh interpretations while honoring the source material. Both tracks highlight the band's ability to reframe classic repertoire without losing its core character.

Most of the album features Jago's original compositions, and his affinity for the blues is never far from the surface. "Fine Line," originally composed nearly two decades ago, swings with a hard bop sensibility. Bejerano and Jago stretch out fluidly over Kerr's walking bass and Chiverton's driving pulse. The album closes on a hopeful note with "Kind Minded," a buoyant, spacious track that encapsulates the ensemble's unity and the album's open-hearted tone.

Time Shift is a confident artistic statement; one that reflects not only Jago's compositional and improvisational maturity, but also the deep rapport of a group fully attuned to his vision. It is jazz with narrative shape, emotional depth, and a refreshing sense of direction. Jago doesn't arrive here; he lands fully formed.
