Stanley Clarke: The Toys of Men
Armato, si fa per dire, della sua immensa tecnica, il bassista si danna a dimostrare quanto siamo stupidi. E non basta il plasticismo delle sue svisate, il funky indolente della sua ritmica, un paio di ammiccamenti allo star system: è tutto inutile. Ma tant’è.
“I giochi degli uomini” nasce proprio da queste considerazioni. La title track, divisa in sei parti, apre gli scenari da guerre terrestri. Gran parte delle tessiture sono dominate dal violino (un po’ retro) di Mads Tolling che serra le fila della truce scenografia.
Prima “Come On”, ma dopo, e soprattutto, “Jerusalem”, ristabiliscono le distanze e il cannone principe del solista emerge con lirismo e sintomatico afflato. “All Over Again” potrebbe essere anche un singolo e la voce di Esperanza Spalding lo spinge sempre più su. Qualche interludio di sano mitragliare “basso” (“Back In The Woods”, “Hmm Hmm”, “El Bajo Negro”) e sipari di tristi quanto romantici scenari (La Cancion de Sofia).
Stanley Clarke le spara grosse. Non sono pallottole né granate, ma incazzate note contro la stupidità. E a noi sta bene così.
La notizia è che il bassista ritornerà, presto, al futuro con Chick Corea, Al Di Meola e Lenny White nella tournée, americana e europea, che sancirà la reunion dei Return to Forever.
