Roy Haynes: The Roy Haynes Trio

By

View read count
Considering that Roy Haynes’ illustrious career spans over 50 years, it would be easier to list the musicians he hasn’t worked with, as opposed to those he has! While the legendary drummer, who is now over 70- years-old, has kept steady time for the greatest names in jazz, his recordings as a leader are rare. This fine trio recording allows Haynes the opportunity to salute a handful of his cohorts — Sarah Vaughan, Bud Powell, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny — and a man he, surprisingly, never played with, Duke Ellington. Pianist Danilo Perez and bassist John Patitucci join the master percussionist on six studio cuts and four tracks recorded live at Scullers in Boston, Mass. Throughout the session Haynes displays all of the trademark drum flourishes he is famous for — dynamic cymbal splashes, firecracker-like rim shots and thunderous tom-tom fills. Certainly, the old pro yields nothing in the energy department to his younger colleagues. ####
