Ray Noble: The Hot Sides 1929-1934

Ballo ed ascolto. È questa l’endiadi di base, per capire l’essenza di molto jazz tradizionale, tra la fine degli anni ’20 e la metà degli anni ’30. Dagli Stati Uniti, la nuova pratica strumentale si diffuse anche in Inghilterra, grazie a tutta una rete di case discografiche e sale da ballo. Ed inglese fu l’arrangiatore nonché direttore d’orchestra Raymond Stanley Noble.

Venuto alla ribalta nel ’26 grazie ad alcuni fortunati stock arrangement di brani da ballo, Noble incominciò via via a comporre riusciti temi, che attirarono subito l’attenzione della locale Gramophone Company.

Coprono un arco temporale di sei anni (1929-36) i 24 brani inclusi in questa raccolta, per restituire lo spirito di una musica estremamente diversificata nella pratica e nelle modalità:one-step, foxtrot, waltz e naturalmente soluzioni più jazzistiche.

È la cosiddetta “Hot Dance Music”, rivolta come già detto ad destare l’interesse di chi ballava i passi doppi. Non erano insomma i salotti, ma i dance club londinesi il terreno ideale per questa trascinante musica. E temi dal titolo emblematico come “Crazy Feet” lo testimoniano in modo inequivocabile.

Questa era oltretutto un’orchestra dalle caratteristiche ben riconoscibili, quale ad esempio l’adozione di note basse per la sezione dei sax. A questo si aggiunga il lavoro preciso, puntuale quasi maniacale del leader, al tempo stesso arrangiatore, direttore musicale e produttore.

Al suo fianco nomi di primo quali il contrabbassista Spike Hughes ed il trombettista Max Goldberg, inglese di nascita ma cresciuto artisticamente in Canada. Ed ancora i violinista Eric Siday, gli statunitensi Sylvester Hooley Ahola alla tromba e Danny Polo al clarinetto.

Alcune di queste composizioni furono incise nel mitico studio londinese di Abbey Road, che aprì i battenti nel 1931. E brani come “Allah’s Holiday” e “Whispering” rivelano quanto il fraseggio ed il timbro di Bix Beiderbecke fossero già influenti nella pratica jazzistica di quel tempo.
