Mark Wingfield: The Gathering
ByThe album kicks off with "The Corkscrew Tower," a whirlwind of sound that immediately grabs you by the lapels and refuses to let go. Wingfield's guitar weaves through the sonic maelstrom, creating a haunting and mesmerizing atmosphere with a delicately delivered melody line. Throughout, the guitarist adds suspense through his legato and reverberating leads. Bassist Tony Levin contributes a performance as powerful as a tidal wave, while Husband's piano phrasings cast a somber narrative. Drummer Asaf Sirkis adds a background punch with heavy tom rolls, crackling snare hits and splashing cymbals.
On "Apparition in the Vaults," Wingfield unleashes a torrent of guitar pyrotechnics atop a pummeling rhythmic drive. Fretless bass expert Percy Jones shares center stage with the leader through swift smooth, and vocal-like soloing and support, complemented by Husband's foreboding synth embellishments and burly drumming.
"The Lost Room" offers a respite from the sonic onslaught, providing a moment of calm amidst the anarchy, though the band amplifies intensity as it progresses. Husband's piano playing is both elegant and soulful, proving that even the most adventurous musicians can appreciate a good melody.
The band displays a freeform jazz-rock persona on "The Listening Trees." On "Cinnamon Bird," Husband's mid-toned synth soloing contrasts with Jones' fluid and hammering solo spot, bridging sweet sensibilities with hardcore momentum. These tracks interconnect transparently, due to Wingfield's signature style and climactic expansions, coinciding with the rhythm section's monstrous grooves that elevate the manifold discourses.
The Gathering is the kind of music that lingers in your mind like a vivid dream, its details just out of reach but undeniably unforgettable. As the final note dissolves into the ether, you are left not just wondering what you just listened to but questioning whether Earth was even the point of origin. This is music that dares to defy gravity, logic, and the boundaries of genre, carrying you to places you did not know you wanted to go to until you arrived. It is progressive rock characterized by a playful spirit and an adventurous naturea captivating auditory experience designed for those who are bold, inquisitive, and open to new and extraordinary sounds.
