Nicola Angelucci: The First One
In apertura di The First One si evince una certa predisposizione per i temi articolati ("Out of Sleep"), sviluppati su tempi frizzanti ("If I Should Lose You") e capaci di inglobare molti spunti timbrico/ritmici. Angelucci ama tradurre in musica la sua passione per la tradizione afroamericana ("Blues for Daddy") e per i grandi maestri ("I Mean You" di Monk) ma crea anche dei percorsi zigzaganti e pregni di modernità espressiva ("Claudia's Nightmare"). Il suo è un lavoro di retroguardia, che lascia molto spazio alle melodie dei solisti chiamati in causa, cosicché la musica di tutto il cd scorre fluente, senza momenti di flessione.
L'intera band ha un approccio alla materia musicale che riesce a coinvolgere l'ascoltatore, e le strutture pensate da Angelucci esaltano le doti dell'ottimo Paolo Recchia al sax e del trombettista Jeremy Pelt, fondamentale per l'economia di The First One.
