Andrew Cyrille - Armando Battiston: The Contact
La performance (ripresa dal vivo il 18 giugno 2006 al festival Friuli Venezia Giulia Jazz 2006) si snoda lungo un percorso variegato e denso di sorprese, dove s'intersecano e si sovrappongono suggestioni tratte dall'intera storia del jazz e non solo. Il libero confronto improvvisato tra i due artisti tende a prevalere, in una prospettiva che richiama alla mente simili esperienze degli anni settanta, ma non mancano brani di fattura classica, esposti con partecipazione e rispetto per la loro identità: è soprattutto il caso di "Prelude to a Kiss" ed in parte del monkiano "Epistrophy" e del dolphyano "Less".
In questi brani, ed in gran parte del disco, Battiston suona il pianoforte mentre le sua doti di fisarmonicista risaltano nella prima parte di "Preludio-India" (la seconda è occupata da un lungo intervento in solo di Cyrille) e quelle di flautista etnico in "Blue African Woman".
Parlando di Andrew Cyrille è superfluo sottolineare la ricchezza della sua articolazione ritmica e l'ampio spettro di colorazioni timbriche che emerge dai suoi interventi, sia nei quadri liberamente improvvisati che in quelli tradizionali, comunque soggetti al suo fantasioso incedere.
Il disco (ed il concerto) si conclude con un intenso blues di Battiston ("The Contract Blues") nel più sincero elogio della tradizione.
