Weasel Walter

Multi-instrumentalist/composer/improviser born 1972 in Rockford, Illinois, probably best known to the general public as being a very fast, high-energy percussionist fusing free jazz and black/death/speed metal approaches. Weasel Walter (first name, last name) moved to Chicago in 1990 and founded the mercurial jazz/punk/noise/metal/prog project the Flying Luttenbachers in late 1991 with Hal Russell. In its various incarnations the group recorded 16 full-length albums and toured the United States and Europe extensively. During the early-to-mid '90s Mr. Walter proved to be a significant catalyst in the Chicago underground rock and improvised music scenes, forging strong connections between the two camps
Chris Pitsiokos: Speak In Tongues And Hope For The Gift Of Interpretation

Saxophonist Chris Pitsiokos, it might be said, was standing on the shoulders of giants when he recorded this solo alto saxophone concert in January of 2019. Indeed, these six tributes take into account the accomplishments of the esteemed masters and, from their shoulders, Pitsiokos enters some rarefied air. His Speak In Tongues And Hope For The ...

Burton Greene / Damon Smith / Ra Kalam Bob Moses: Life’s Intense Mystery

Let's give credit to whomever assembled this swinging free-improvisation trio. Sometimes, no, invariably, all great improvised music results from the reciprocal nature of the musicians: not something done in response to another (although it can be) but by some subconscious agreement made by the players. A fine example is Life's Intense Mystery by the trio of ...
Kyle Bruckmann's Degradient: Dear Everyone

Leap of Faith: Domains

In 2009, David Peck's (PEK) Leap of Faith group reconvened after a lengthy hiatus to become a prolific producer of music that is always far outside the box. His Evil Clown label has flourished with a company of like-minded artists working in a collective environment. Leap of Faith has performed and recorded in formations ranging from ...

Dragonfly Breath III: Live at the Stone: Megaloprepus Caerulatus

Today's zen koan: why does a watched pot never boil? The answer to that question is found in the music of Dragonfly Breath III: because it is always boiling. The roil we speak of comes from the quartet of saxophonist Paul Flaherty, trombonist Steve Swell, violinist C. Spencer Yeh, and drummer Weasel Walter. The ...
Nate Wooley/Hugo Antunes/Jorge Queijo/Mário Costa/Chris Corsano: Purple Patio

If I had to do it all over again, I would not have judged Purple Patio as soon as I dropped the needle onto the LP. Yes, this is a vinyl-only release, and yes, it is only an edition of 300 copies. Instead, I should have listened to both sides all the way through. But that ...
Three from Henry Kaiser on Balance Point Acoustics

The Balance Point Acoustics label was set up by double bassist Damon Smith in 2001 to document his own music. In the years since, the label has issued a steady stream of recordings, most featuring Smith. Significantly, the first of the label's releases not to include the bassist was the 2006 Henry Kaiser solo album Domo ...
