Gary Urwin: Inside the Mind of an Arranger

Read "Gary Urwin: Inside the Mind of an Arranger" reviewed by Rob Wood

The arranger of music scores is as important as a crankshaft in an engine. Yet many are destined to live in the shadows. Ralph Carmichael was subsumed by the luster of Stan Kenton. Arranger Paul Riser, who wrote the opening bars to “Dancing in the Street," is a virtual unknown. And then there is ...

David Ricard Big Band: Parallels

Read "Parallels" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Whatever else the fates may decree, fortune must be smiling when one can open a big-band album with the workaday theme from “Spider-Man" and make it shine. Bassist David Ricard is fortune's beneficiary here, as are those partisans who are lucky enough to chance upon Parallels, Ricard's third and most recent treatise on big-band excellence. Whereas ...

Lasse Lindgren Big Constellation: The Unrecorded Fox

Read "The Unrecorded Fox" reviewed by Jack Bowers

When it comes to playing high-note jazz trumpet, the late great Maynard Ferguson was, is and perhaps always will be the standard to which every specialist in that limited field aspires. Yes, there have been assorted claimants--Cat Anderson, Ziggy Elman, Jon Faddis, Dave Stahl, Eric Miyashiro, Wayne Bergeron and Dennis Noday spring to mind--but no one ...

Drummer, Vocalist And Humorist Dave Tull's Highly Anticipated CD, "Texting And Driving," Releases On Toy Car Records

Dave Tull is a witty observer of the trials and tribulations of everyday life … especially the life of a professional musician. Although Tull has been playing ...

Dave Tull: texting and driving

Read "texting and driving" reviewed by Nicholas F. Mondello

Wallflower. The word has zero application to describe jazz drummer, vocalist and composer/arranger/producer, Dave Tull. He's more like a Venus Fly-Trap of talent, devouring all those activities and offering a keen eye for life's surrealities. He demos all on his second CD, texting and driving. It might just be what's needed for a long, endless drive ...

Allen Carter Big Band: Time on My Hands

Read "Time on My Hands" reviewed by Jack Bowers

In 2010, composer / arranger / drummer Allen Carter seemingly appeared from out of nowhere (North Dakota, actually) to record Gifts, his first album as a big-band leader and one of the more impressive anthologies in that or any other year. As 2016 passed its midpoint and moved inexorably toward a final bow, Carter decided the ...
