Toni Ballard

Born: July 12, 1946

Boston-based vocalist Toni Ballard, who is profiled in "Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide" (Backbeat Press) by jazz writer Scott Yanow, has been singing with big bands and in jazz settings in New England since 1979. The Chicago native has performed with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, the White Heat Swing Orchestra, the Boston Big Band, the Silver Bullet Swing Orchestra, the Worcester Jazz Orchestra, and the Ryles Jazz Orchestra, including an appearance in 2002 at the Boston Globe Jazz Festival. She has appeared in Boston at Scullers Jazz Club, Ryles, the Starlight Roof and the Regattabar and has been featured on WGBH radio on "Homegrown" and "Jazz with Eric in the Evening" with Eric Jackson and "Music America" with Ron Della Chiesa

Marta Topferova’s new album illustrates why The London Times has called her “one of the most graceful interpreters of Latin American folk music”. Recorded in Prague after a tour with her New York ensemble, “Trova” (The Troubadour Tradition), is a culmination of Marta’s love of styles such as the Cuban son and Puerto Rican bomba. Comprised of eight original and three traditional pieces, and featuring a stunning array of Cuban tres, four-string cuatro, violin, bass, percussion and tight vocal harmonies, Trova is Marta’s liveliest release to date. A Brazilian professional actor and singer, Thiago Pach is well known for his strong and versatile tenor voice and for his sensitive performances of an eclectic musical selection that goes from Blues and Jazz songs to the most extraordinary Brazilian popular music repertory. He started his studies in drama when he was fourteen, in O Tablado, a drama school from Maria Clara Machado. At this age he was already strongly involved in theater and music. Bobby Womack

Born: March 4, 1944

One of the most enigmatic and talented Soul men of all time, Bobby Womack has been a link from 50s Gospel to 60s Soul to 70s Rock and to some of the greatest musicians in each genre. Born in an extremely devout religious family, he was singing Gospel with his brothers Cecil, Friendly, Harry and Curtis as the Womack Brothers while he was still a child.The talented group was discovered by Gospel/Soul legend Sam Cooke, who renamed them the Valentinos and transformed them into a teenage secular vocal group. By the early 60s The Valentinos were touring with James Brown and scoring on the R&B charts with their first hit, "Lookin' For A Love." Cooke's death in 1964 sent the group on a spiral from which it would never recover

Gunilla Törnfeldt

Gunilla Törnfeldt is a jazz vocalist, composer, and educator based in Stockholm. Her career took off in 2002, when she began performing with leading Swedish jazz artists including Monica Dominique Quintet, Carl-Axel Dominique Trio, Georg Riedel, Jan Allan, and Ove Lundin. Since then, she has become a distinctive voice on the Swedish jazz scene as a singer, composer, and arranger. In 2006, she was awarded the Fasching Friends’ Scholarship for “seriously and with strong dedication striving to renew and develop jazz music and related genres.” Her critically acclaimed solo debut A Time for Everything (2009) was followed by Behind the Mask (2017).
