Jua

Born:

Incredible how it’s been over ten years since Jua Howard was making quite a name for himself in neo-soul circles, crooning in velvety tenor tones reminiscent of Luther Vandross and Donny Hathaway in clubs from New York City to London. “Anticipation”, his 2007 self-released debut CD of mostly original mid-tempo tunes and ballads, was picking up play on Smooth Jazz and R&B stations. Yet Jua, who uses only his first name professionally (Swahili for “sun”), was having second thoughts about his musical direction. The Chicago-born singer says, “With the R&B neo-soul scene, everything started to sound the same.” While living in the Washington D.C

Retta Christie

Retta Christie has staked a claim to a fabulously rich but oft-overlooked vein of Americana, a musical mother lode located at the dusty crossroads where the American Songbook and the country-western canon converge. A vocalist with a light twangy timbre, breezy sense of swing, and a gift for conveying the emotional essence of a lyric, Christie delivers an eagerly anticipated second volume of her collaboration with reed expert David Evans and piano legend Dave Frishberg (who’s responsible for one of the American Songbook’s most witty chapters, though that facet of his work isn’t represented here)

Melissa Dinwiddie

Is this jazz, folk, or comedy? Performer (and “Uke-Diva”) Melissa Dinwiddie is a winning combination of all three. Interactive music and comedy… with a ukulele.

Remember the girl next door? You know the one, the bookworm who kept you on your toes with her quick wit and smart alecky sense of humor. That one. Whatever happened to her, you might be asking yourself. I’ll tell you what happened: she grew up and traded in her teddy bears, roller skates and skinned knees for an evening gown, a microphone… and a ukulele. Melissa Dinwiddie is still keeping you on your toes, but now it’s to a melody line.

Inspired by the absurdities of modern life, Dinwiddie crafts songs evocative of the Great American Songbook but dealing with 21st Century themes

Jazzator

The band Jazzator marries the freedom of jazz to the harmonic vocabulary of contemporary art music and adds the vigor of stadium rock to the mixture. The music of the band often shifts from the mainstream to the vanguard within one song and is based on powerful use of non-conventional vocal parties and rich piano arrangements. The tunes composed by Marina for piano, vocals and drums constitute the most important part of the band’s repertoire. These pieces were inspired by such artists as The Bad Plus, Thelonious Monk, Avishai Cohen, Sergei Rachmaninov and Igor Stravinsky. The core of the band consists of Marina Sobyanina (vocals, piano, composer) and Sergey Balashov (drums) but Jazzator’s live performances as well as the bands’ studio records always feature various guest musicians playing double bass, clarinet, cello, violin, bass-clarinet, flute and other instruments
