Melanie De Biasio
Born:
Melanie De Biasio is a graduate of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles and already an acclaimed artist in her home country of Belgium and in the neighbouring Francophone nation to the south.
Initially heralded as a new voice in jazz, albeit jazz "d'autres univers", other-worldly, so to speak, her first album "A Stomach Is Burning" was closer to the smoky, smouldering sound you dream of stumbling upon in a jazz cellar. Preferably in Paris or New York in, let's say, 1959.
"No Deal", her sophomore album, appears almost monochromatically minimalist at first, A simple cover shot. Melanie has cut her hair. Miles Davis "A Kind Of Blue" typography. Seven songs, through which her own voice drifts gracefully, at times disappearing altogether. Like a tintype photograph, this record needs time to develop, for the details to become clear, as if by magic.

Lil Greenwood
Born:
Rightly best known for her time as one the main singers for the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the late 50s and early 60s, Lil Greenwood's polished performances in those times always gave more than a hint of her blues and R&B background. The Duke remarked of her "I don't know but what, whether she's better on spirituals or when she's walking and singing the blues." Lil's roots were put down in November 1924 in the little town of Prichard in the Acadian delta country of Lower Alabama (known locally as "the other L.A.";). Before school age she already was sharing her vocal charms with the adoring parishioners of her father's cypress-planked Baptist Church

Halley Elwell
Born:
Halley Elwell is a songwriter whose memorable melodies, vibrant imagery and wit pull the ear somewhere old and new. Elwell boldly exhibits this in her song Sisters on the J Train, recently named a John Lennon Songwriting Contest finalist in the jazz catagory. Elwell wrote the song after riding the J train in San Francisco with a group of praying nuns. “At the time I was a confused and somewhat lost 20-something observing the colorful but divided lives of people in San Francisco. At the beginning my first instinct was to bristle and question, but ultimately the prayers of the sisters on the J train ended up being an unlikely gift that morning.” Weaving tales of travel and nostalgia into lush and layered rhythms, Elwell’s upcoming EP, Last of What I Know, pays homage to the sounds of late 1960’s and 1970s songwriters like Laura Nyro

King Oliver's Revolver
Born:
A few words from Tom Maxwell … As a musician and songwriter, I have only ever tried to please myself and my colleagues. While the brief success that I enjoyed in the Squirrel Nut Zippers was gratifying, true validation was to come later. I still hear from fans who have been touched by my music; who have incorporated it into their lives, as a soundtrack to triumph and tragedy. This is deeply moving. What could only be possibly better is hearing from musicians who cite me as inspiration. This is as much immortality as I can hope for! To be clear, I have never considered myself an innovator of anything, unless one innovates through synthesis
