Viktoria Tolstoy

The Swedish singer Viktoria Tolstoy was born in the small town of Sigtuna, near Stockholm, in 1974, but she has Russian blood in her veins. Her great-grandfather, the son of the world-famous writer Leo Tolstoy, grew up in Tsarist Russia. He suffered from a nervous illness, sought medical help from a famous Swedish specialist, fell in love with the specialist’s daughter, married her and settled in Sweden at the end of the 19th century. Since then the ancestors of Viktoria, the greatgreat-granddaughter of the legendary novelist, have lived in Sweden. Viktoria’s childhood and adolescence were spent in Uppsala

Jacob Karlzon 3: More

In his 20-year career he's released half a dozen albums under his own name and appeared on around 40 others. The Jacob Karlzon ...

Bob Downes Open Music: 5 Trios

Read "5 Trios" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

Read "Siegfried Loch: 50 Years on the Music-Making Scene" reviewed by R.J. DeLuke

With a half-century in the music recording business, Siegfried Loch, known to friends and associates as Siggi, has had a huge impact on the jazz music scene in Europe. Jazz isn't the only thing he's been involved in as a producer over all those years, but having his own jazz label--ACT Music, based in Munich, Germany--was ...

Jacob Karlzon: Heat / Improvisational Three

Read "Jacob Karlzon: Heat / Improvisational Three" reviewed by Chris Mosey

Jacob Karlzon is one of the most interesting pianists on today's Swedish jazz scene--percussive, intense, yet capable of great lyricism. Unwilling to be pigeonholed, he plays in a great many different constellations, most visibly with vocalist Viktoria Tolstoy, great granddaughter of Leo, for whom he composes and arranges. At the age of 39, Karlzon has already ...

Viktoria Tolstoy: Pictures Of Me

Read "Pictures Of Me" reviewed by Dr. Jeff Monroe

Since Norah Jones' gargantuan hit CD some years ago, the field of pop/jazz, folk/jazz, and R&B/jazz singers is getting crowded. Some may bemoan this jazz adulteration, but if it brings new listeners to the music it's all good. Charlie Parker was, after all, lambasted for ruining jazz with bebop. From Sweden comes 32 year-old Viktoria Tolstoy, ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
