OK Aurora: Only In Autumn
by Chris May
Rod Oughton is a young London drummer with considerable technical proficiency, and a composer and bandleader of promise. With his octet OK Aurora, which prominently features singer Alina Miroshnichenko, Oughton aims to bridge the gap between jazz and what might rather patronizingly be called intelligent pop. Only In Autumn is the band's second release, following the ...
Richard X Bennett: RXB3
by Chris May
Brooklyn-based pianist Richard X Bennett is kind of the love child of Ramsey Lewis and Norah Jones with a head stuffed full of mescaline. He has Lewis' two-fisted poppy funkiness down and Jones' gift for a melodic hook, too. The combination is enriched, one speculates, by extensive first-hand knowledge of hallucinogens. Solstice: Food For Thought
by Chris May
An off-the-wall and extraordinarily beautiful album, Food For Thought is London sextet Solstice's follow-up to Alimentation (Two Rivers), a niche-jazz landmark in 2016. The album blends jazz with prog-rock and tropicalia-like psychedelia. It is intricate, lyrical and wildly inventive. It is also technically demanding and forensically arranged, yet it all sounds effortless. It is, most of ...
Yoko Miwa Trio: Songs Of Joy
by Dan McClenaghan
A steady gig must be a Godsend to any jazz musician. The chance to work on stage and on schedule can be the cornerstone to artistic development and a melding of the ensemble mind. For pianist Yoko Miwa, that steady job was, for a decade and a half, at Les Zygomates Wine Bar and Bistro in ...
Will Glaser: Climbing In Circles
by Chris May
Women musicians seem more inclined to describe their albums as playful" than their male counterparts. We need not spend time speculating on the reasons for that here. Playful, however, is the word that best sums up this delightful trio album by two generations of male musicians. Young bloods drummer Will Glaser and saxophonist Matthew Herd have ...
