MUSICIAN Born:

Travis Shook

Former Sony/Columbia recording artist Travis Shook is somewhat of a jazz enigma. He has been called a “man of mystery” by JazzTimes, “pianist-in-exile” by Time Out New York, and although he has been highly praised by the likes of Tony Williams and Ahmad Jamal, remains largely unknown to the public. Shook is an acoustic jazz pianist”one who demonstrates an unusually wide scope of feeling from the simple to the complex, the conventional to the unconventional, and from the softest, most lush ballads, to the fiercest, hard-driving jazz. “It's all the same to me,” Shook explains

Rick Mandyck: The Return From Now

Read "Rick Mandyck: The Return From Now" reviewed by Paul Rauch

It was a cold Tuesday evening the last week of December. 2016 was mercifully coming to a close, this evening, a final chorus of a long blues blown soulfully, and mournfully into the night. I sat at the bar at Seattle's storied jazz spot, Tula's, in eager anticipation of the evening's performance of a quartet led ...

Bunky Green: Urgency and Continuity

Read "Bunky Green: Urgency and Continuity" reviewed by Anil Prasad

Saxophonist Bunky Green bristles at the idea of playing by the rules. The two first met when Marriott was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle, and Vega was ...

Travis Shook Meets Jazz Comeback Head on at Tula's

The jazz pianist Travis Shook, a curiosity to some who remember his name, a cautionary tale for others, lives in rural, upstate New York, far from the city and the place he first greeted fame. People don't recognize him much these days, and for a long time he preferred it that way. “I'm 40 and I ...

Travis Shook: Awake

Read "Awake" reviewed by Edward Blanco

Seven years ago pianist Travis Shook went into a recording studio and emerged three days later having laid down enough material to come away with several new releases. Awake is one of the albums produced in that three-day recording session. The album was recorded essentially as a core trio with bassist Jennifer Vincent and drummer Jaz ...

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
