Dave Rempis: The Covid Tapes

by John Sharpe
Like many during the pandemic, Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis turned to novel outlets for his artistic expression. Some fine examples of that output are captured on the double album The Covid Tapes, which pleasingly alternates six unaccompanied performances from the practice room (of between 3 and 7 minutes), with four outdoor live outings (of between 16 ...
The Rempis Percussion Quartet: Sud Des Alpes

by Mark Corroto
Sometimes a band hits a stretch, much like an athlete with a hot hand, and produces a string of special recordings. Sud Des Alpes is The Rempis Percussion Quartet's tenth release and it follows Cochonnerie (Aerophonic, 2017). Like all the quartet's releases except Montreal Parade (482 Music, 2011), it captures a live performance. This at AMR ...

In the summer of 2020 one result of the COVID-19 isolation, and artists inability to tour and perform is that they have time to deal with projects halted by this pandemic. Steve Swell / Robert Boston / Michael Vatcher: Brain In A Dish

by John Sharpe
It is hard to think of a more complete trombone player on the scene than Steve Swell. While a go-to sideman for the likes of William Parker, Ken Vandermark, Jason Kao Hwang and Tim Daisy, he has also amassed a significant body of work over the years in his own right. Although his output has featured ...

Made To Break: F4 Fake

by Mark Corroto
If you count their three download-only releases from 2016, F4 Fake by Ken Vandermark's Made To Break is the band's ninth release since forming in 2011. This is significant because like his quintet Vandermark 5, which existed from 1996 until 2010, this quartet and his ensemble Marker are the main drivers for the trailblazing composer. Not ...
Inexhaustible Editions: The Little Label That Roars

by Mark Corroto
In the 1980s, American writer John Corbett traveled Europe searching for out-of-print LPs from small labels which he eventually produced reissues titled the Unheard Music Series first for Atavistic Records, then his own Corbett vs. Dempsey label. His mission was to preserve the music which formed the jazz and improvisation canon but was largely ignored, simply ...
