Futari: Underground

Read "Underground" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Pianist Satoko Fujii found another perfect musical partner in 2017, in the Berlin-based mallet maven Taiko Saito, resulting, eventually, in their duo outing Beyond (Libra Records, 2021). The pair dubbed themselves “Futari" ('two people' in Japanese). Underground surfaces as their second 2021 release ("prolific" is a word usually included in a description of Fujii's output).

Instrumental Duos

Read "Instrumental Duos" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Converted dance orchestras often sounded like unbalanced acoustic junkyards; a single violin, cornet, trombone, clarinet, tuba, drums, banjo, and piano, all fighting for attention. The piano was meant to be the glue holding the shrill and boisterous elements together. In 1921 a prodigy pianist named Zez Confrey ...

Dave Sewelson, Satoko Fujii and Tatsuya Yoshida & More

Read "Dave Sewelson, Satoko Fujii and Tatsuya Yoshida & More" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

There's a definite theme of muscular sounding saxophone in this edition of One Man's Jazz: Dave Sewelson, Steve Baczkowski, Chris Pitsiokos, Massimo Magee, Tomasz Szukalski, Marty Ehrlich, Cene Resnik, David Leon, Jonas Kullhammar and Remy Alvarez can all skronk with the best of them, and they're somewhere blowing their reeds apart throughout the music in this ...

Fujii reunites with Tatsuya Yoshida ...
