Portraits Jazz Project

Included in Karl Ackermann's Best Releases of 2019. Portraits featuring Adalia Tara was born in a coffeehouse in Sedona, Arizona, on a sultry summer evening in 2016. An impromptu coming together of local Sedona jazz talent behind the powerful vocals of Adalia Tara attracted a following that overwhelmed the capacity of the small venue by the second show. Performing thereafter at larger venues, resorts, and vineyards, the band was also featured in the the L’Auberge Summer Concert Series. Portraits has consistently filled rooms to over capacity. Richard Pavlidis

Born: December 31, 1985

Richard Pavlidis is a saxophonist, composer, teacher and multi-instrumentalist from Melbourne, Australia. Educated at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Richard has toured Australia, New Zealand and Europe and has performed at major festivals including Splendour in the Grass, The Manly Jazz Festival in Sydney, and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Richard's debut solo album 'Without Within' was released worldwide in 2019 and supported by an Australian tour. Music from this album can be found in the Australian Jazz Real Book and the Australian Jazz Museum. Mark Lewis

Born: January 26, 1958

Seattle area native Mark Lewis is a well-traveled saxophonist and flutist who has created a large body of jazz music over the past four decades. He’s been a part of jazz scenes from Seattle and San Francisco to Rotterdam and Paris. His latest album, Naked Animals, was recorded in 1990 with his Quartet from the Netherlands. It's an important historical recording of a working neo-bop Quartet that had an enthusiastic following for more than a decade. His 2017 release The New York Session features piano legend George Cables, veteran bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Victor Lewis. Mark was rated number two for alto saxophone (after Richie Cole) and number three for flute (after Charles Lloyd and Hubert Laws) in the 39th Annual Jazz Station Awards for his work on this album.

Bob Roden

Bob came from a family of musicians and became a full-time professional himself at age 20. He toured for over a decade, starting out in Holiday Inn lounges and working up to top showrooms such as Harrah’s in Reno/Tahoe and the Sahara in Las Vegas. Bob took a brief hiatus from professional music to have a career as a technology and entertainment lawyer, but is delighted to be back at it now. Melbourne based, freelance jazz pianist Learned classical piano and violin as a child, spent year in US 1979, studied briefly at Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Milwaukee 1979; leader of Monash Jazz Quintet (1980- 82), Monash University Big Band 1982-3, solo jazz piano gigs 1980-now, Simon Pilbrow Quartet 1983-4, Julian Driscoll Quartet 1985-87; performed with Allan Browne, Gary Costello, Geoff Kluke, Ben Robertson; Nick Haywood; Edward York; guitarist George Golla in June 1988; house pianist Royal Derby Jazz Jam (1990); Graham Finch Quartet (1999-2002) and Peninsula Jazz Trio (2002->2009), residency Hickinbotham’s Winery (2000-2006), and featured guests including Savannah Blount, Gianni Marinucci; Pete Mitchell, many others, and Australian jazz legends George Golla, Alan Lee and Don Burrows; “Dizzy’s” Big Band 2004 Led Simon Pilbrow Trio and ran a series of fundraiser jazz concerts for relief of world natural disasters 2010-2011
