Harold Land Jr

Harold Land, Jr. has toured Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America with Jazz and Funk greats such as Marvin Gaye, Gerald Wilson, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Burrell, Pharoah Saunders, Lee Morgan, Roy Ayers, Roland Kirk, Sweet Baby J'ai, Dwight Trible, and many others.

The Crusaders' pianist Joe Sample introduced Harold to Wayne Henderson. The meeting led to Harold's first professional gig, and to his first two album appearances, including the cult favorite “People Get Ready”. He credits bandleader Gerald Wilson with giving him his first traditional Jazz gig, which came shortly after his time with Henderson. Harold accumulated important credits touring with Jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell and saxophonist Pharoah Saunders.

Some of Harold's most visible tours and performances took place on the road with Marvin Gaye and Roy Ayers. Harold says about Marvin, “We toured all over the South and then did a couple of shows at Radio City Music Hall. He would often come out and play basketball with members of the band. I always though of him as a quiet, reflective type of person who loved sports and music.”

Harold has also worked with the late guitarist Eric Gale, saxophonist Joe Henderson, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, and of course, his father, Jazz great saxophonist, Harold Land, Sr.

Harold Land Jr. continues to pass on the knowledge of music, and has taught and given workshops at several Los Angeles based music schools and high schools, such as Washington Prepatory High School, Alain LeRoy Locke College Preparatory Academy, Alta Loma Music, and The World Stage.
