Even though Porcupine Tree began as a solo project for a young Steven Wilson in the late 1980s--and despite the British singer/guitarist/keyboardist remaining its primary composer through to The Incident (Kscope, 2009) and the recent live record from that tour, Octane Twisted (Kscope, 2012)--it's been some time since the group was truly representative of his aspirations, ...

Larks' Tongues in Aspic (40th Anniversary Series Box)

The idea of a 15-disc box set to commemorate the release of what was, in 1973, a single vinyl LP clocking in at a mere 46 minutes might seem a tad excessive, but when you're talking King Crimson and the seminal Larks' Tongues in Aspic, it's a whole other story. Beyond being an important addition to ...

Steven Wilson: Luck's What You Make It

Read "Steven Wilson: Luck's What You Make It" reviewed by John Kelman

There was a time when progressive rock really meant what its name suggested: progressive music, music that pushed the boundaries of what rock music was, often by integrating elements of classical music and jazz into the mix. Milestone groups ranging from better-knowns like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and Van der Graaf Generator ...

Luminol

Featuring the music of Steven Wilson
Duration: 12:32

"Luminol," a live track from progressive rocker Steven Wilson's live DVD, Get All You Deserve (Kscope, 2012). Since the Porcupine Tree front man went solo, first with Insurgentes (Kscope, 2009) and then with the even more impressive Grace for Drowning (Kscope, 2011), he's brought back the philosophy of early progressive rock, where jazz and classically trained musicians come into the rock world for music that may not be either, but speaks the language of both. Wilson's live band includes saxophonist/flautist Theo Travis (Travis & Fripp, Soft Machine Legacy), keyboardist Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Wallace Roney), drummer Marco Minnemann (Alex Machacek, Adrian Belew), bassist Nick Beggs (Steve Hackett) and guitarist Niko Tsonev, and "Luminol" is Wilson's first track written specifically for this band.
