Darmon Meader

Recognized in both the jazz vocal and instrumental worlds, Darmon Meader is a highly respected vocalist, arranger and saxophonist. Darmon has achieved international recognition as the founder, musical director, chief arranger, composer, producer, saxophonist, and vocalist with New York Voices. As a member of New York Voices, he has released numerous recordings on the GRP, RCA/Victor, Concord and MCGJazz labels. In the fall of 2007, New York Voices released their long-awaited MCGJazz release “A Day Like This,” and in January of 2008, Darmon released his much anticipated debut solo CD, And So Am I

Albert Beger

Born in Turkey in 1959 and raised in Israel, Albert Beger's musical sensibilities were informed from a young age by the vast cultural melting pot that surrounded him. The deeply diverse and eclectic range of sounds he heard offered a rich musical landscape upon which to draw continuing inspiration - a colorful palette of melody, harmony and rhythm that would impact his future direction as a composer and improviser. Albert's eclectic tastes are evident in his own compositions. Listening to his energetic, soulful pieces one hears a confluence of styles. A "World Music" that the term "world music" simply doesn't do justice to - bebop, hard bop and free jazz, contemporary classical and ethnic music, progressive rock and electronica - delivered in an indefinable style that is pure Albert Beger. And of course there's that sound: free of border or limitations…a spark reaching beyond to grasp the fire of the Divine …a fearless, joyful noise that embraces experimentalism and tradition, and lyricism and frenzy, with equal passion, love and respect. Albert has spent years wood-shedding his instrument, a reflection of his penchant for self-discipline and auto-didactic study and an uncanny love for the saxophone and its seemingly endless aural possibilities

Norbert Stein

Norbert Stein is a saxophonist and composer and established the Pata Music label to document his work with a variety of ensembles: Pata Messengers; Pata On The Cadillac; Pata, Horns & Drums; Pata Generators; Pata Masters; Pata Orchestra; Pata Horns; Pata Trio and Pata Blue Chip. Beside performing in Europe, he went on numerous concert tours such as to Brazil, Africa, USA, Australia, Singapore and Indonesia. Several musical encounters were realized in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut. You will find these international music cooperations documented on various PATA CDs. As a bandleader and composer, Norbert's approach is to create structures or atmospheres in which his colleagues can articulate their own ideas

Logan Richardson

Born and, raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Logan Richardson was mentored by some of the finest figures in the history of improvised music, including Jay McShann, Claude "Fiddler" Williams, and Queen Bey, in addition to having artists such as Max Roach, Shirley Scott, Jimmy Heath, Clark Terry, Kenny Burrell, Marcus Belgrave, Richard Davis as artists in residence between the ages of 15 to 19 years old. At 19 years old he moved to Boston, Massachusetts to study at the Berklee College of Music, and after one year Logan left Boston to move to New York to complete his studies at The New School University on a full scholarship

George Cartwright

Born in the Mississippi Delta George has been performing composed and improvised musics for over 20 years. From totally improvised concepts to the relatively structured beat music of his band Curlew his experiences have been considerable. From a starting point at Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio in 1977 and a move to NYC fall of 1979 he has seen and participated in musical changes and challenges no one could foresee. And he's loved it.

Few contemporary composer/performers have had as varied and extensive experience in the changing concepts of avant music and maintained as high a quality of work. His compositions are at once direct and mysterious, possessing a clarity and focus that show both Ellington and Ornette assimilated in the the most unique of ways. With melodies wrangled to their essence, structures dense, clear and unpredictable it is a music that stands on its own.

Jonathon Haffner

Jonathon Haffner was raised in Southern California where he began playing saxophone at an early age. While in California Jonathon began studying saxophone with Phil Sobel. Since moving to New York City Jonathon has performed/recorded with Butch Morris, Kenny Wollesen, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Steven Bernstein, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Uri Caine, Jim Black, Eddie Henderson, Chris Potter, Sex Mob, Cindi Lauper, Jesse Harris, Brazilian Girls, Brian Blade, Graham Haynes, Jonas Mekas, The Nublu Orchestra, Ilhan Ersahin, Elliott Sharp, Art Baron, David Binney, and Rickie Lee Jones. Jonathon also co-leads the group 'Himalayas' with drummer Kenny Wollesen, and performs in the ensemble 'Now We Are Here' which is led by filmmaker Jonas Mekas.

Phillip Johnston

Born: 1955

Phillip Johnston was born in 1955 in Chicago IL USA, and raised in New York. During the 1970s in New York City he met and began playing with a number of associates, many of whom would be come life long collaborators, such as John Zorn, Joel Forrester, Eugene Chadbourne, Bill Horvitz, Wayne Horvitz, Dave Hofstra, Richard Dworkin, Shelley Hirsch, Bruce Ackley, Jon Raskin and many others. During the 1970s he yo-yo’d back and forth between San Francisco and New York, eventually settling in New York in late 1979. During this time he also worked as an actor, sound operator and studio manager for R. Foreman’s Ontological Hysteric Theater.

Jakob Dinesen

If Danish jazz has one genuine playboy, it must be 46-year old Jakob Dinesen – with a thick line under play. He and his sax and his good looks have romped around most of the world: Europe, Africa, Cuba, Thailand, USA, Japan and Australia. He has received just about every award a Danish musician can get – Grammys and soloist awards. When he saunters on stage, there are always a few moments of total concentration; then a crisp, searching sound emerges from the bell of his sax before starting up. Perhaps jumping straight into an improvisation, perhaps a loyal interpretation of whatever tune is on the agenda. Behind him lies music played with Paul Motian, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ben Street, Eddie Gomez, Steve Swallow, Tony Allen, Etienne Mbappe, Ignacio Berroa, Nasheet Waits – just to drop a few names

Chris Kelsey

Born: June 5, 1961

In the 1990s, soprano saxophonist Chris Kelsey was a fixture on the Downtown New York scene, his fiery yet lissome horn lighting up the neighborhood’s bars and galleries—most notably the Knitting Factory, then the world’s epicenter of experimental music. He also chronicled the scene as a journalist, writing and reviewing for Cadence, Jazziz, JazzTimes, and more. His pen was as fearless as his music.

Then, in the early aughts, Kelsey stepped away.

The cultural aftershocks of 9/11 were a devastating blow to the Downtown scene. Venues like the Knitting Factory wilted and died. Kelsey’s live appearances became rare. By the late 2010s, he had stopped writing about jazz entirely. Many assumed he’d left the music behind.
