Ian Young was born in Oakland, California, and grew up in Berkeley, CA, Boston, MA, and New York City. In his formative years, he studied with Joe Viola, George Coleman and Lenny Pickett. Upon graduating from Friends Seminary High School, he accepted a scholarship to the Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio, where he studied with Donald Walden, Robin Eubanks and Paul Cohen. While attending Oberlin, he played throughout Cleveland at such venues as Severence Hall and the Bop Stop. After Oberlin, Ian returned to New York and has performed as a leader and a sideman at the Blue Note, Birdland, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Sweet Rhythm, the Lenox Lounge, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Dizzy Gillespie Auditorium, et al

Diego Rivera

A world-class musician, composer, arranger and educator, Diego Rivera has entertained audiences for over 20 years. Rivera is known for his muscular tone and unique blend of straight-ahead jazz fused with music inspired by his Latino background and heritage. He is a tenured Associate Professor of Jazz Saxophone at Michigan State University where he also serves as Associate Director of Jazz Studies. 

Rivera was born in Ann Arbor, MI and raised ‘just up the road’ in East Lansing, MI. Born into a Mexican-American family, his Chicano heritage has always been important to him and shaped his creative endeavors. His parents named him after the famed muralist, Diego Rivera. A trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts at a young age inspired him to make his own mark with the Saxophone rather than the brush. He attended Michigan State University where he studied with Andrew Speight, Branford Marsalis, Ron Blake and Rodney Whitaker.

Chris Weller, born 1988, is an emerging saxophone talent, instructor, and composer in Chicago, IL. He grew in Oak Park, near the rich culture and vibrant musical scene in Chicago. By 15, Chris was playing professionally, and frequenting jazz clubs in the city like Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge. He went on to attend Berklee College of Music as a World Scholarship Tour Recipient from 2007-2010 where he received his bachelors degree in Music Performance. While in college Chris was fortunate to learn from George Garzone, drum master Bob Moses, Ed Tomassi, Jim Odgren, Greg Hopkins, Benny Golson, Mark Turner, and many other great musicians/teachers.  He also performed extensively during that time in Jazz, Latin, and Hip Hop idioms all across the nation

Sam Sadigursky

Since moving to New York in 2002, Sam Sadigursky continues to make a mark as both a leader and sideman across a broad spectrum of musical landscapes. His series of four albums of original music based on poetry and text for New Amsterdam Records, entitled The Words Project, have been acclaimed internationally. Noted music critic Steve Smith called them “compelling and touchingly intimate… that rare anomaly: a jazz-and-poetry record that sounds utterly natural and convincing“ and went on to name Sadigursky’s debut album as one of Time Out New York’s top ten albums of 2007, and the New York Times has called them ”gracefully high-minded explorations of poetic form.” Following the 2015 release of his latest album, Follow the Stick, he was named a rising star on clarinet in the Downbeat Magazine Critic’s Poll, on which he has continued to appear annually. Since 2022, he has released five volumes of music with accordionist and multi-instrumentalist Nathan Koci called The Solomon Diaries for Adyâropa Records.

Benjamin Herman

Benjamin Herman got his first saxophone at the age of twelve. At thirteen he was already playing on the professional club circuit. Within a few years he was appearing with different groups around the world and initiating projects of his own. His fame spread beyond jazz circles in the 1990s when he formed the groundbreaking ensemble New Cool Collective. Having made a name as soloist while still a teenager, Benjamin Herman has appeared on over a hundred records with all kinds of artists, from Candy Dulfer to Misha Mengelberg. Herman has also built a career in Holland and abroad as a composer. With New Cool Collective as well as with his smaller band’s his gigs are inspired by dance floor jazz, surf and punk music, free jazz and traditional music from all over the world, attracting music fans of all genres as well as straight ahead jazz aficionados

Today, 2AZZ1 is one of the most popular Adult Contemporary/ Smooth Jazz Bands on the Southern California club & Festival scene. The mixture of their original music and the 2AZZ1 arrangements of popular music keeps their audiences listening and dancing. It is their original material, however, which seems to be drawing the greatest responses. Their 2001 release, "REaDy", contains ten original songs that run from groove ballads to classic jazz fusion with a new urban/world flare. Their current release, "Driven" is jam packed with great hit songs that are currently receiving air play on radio stations around the world
