Peter Sommer

Peter Sommer, saxophonist and composer, is in demand as a performer, clinician and recording artist throughout the state of Colorado. Since establishing himself among the area’s elite jazz musicians, Peter has contributed his muscular tenor playing and creative spirit to a wide variety of musical projects ranging from mainstream bebop to avant garde and beyond. Peter is a member of the Ken Walker Sextet, whose recent release on Synergy Music, Terra Firma, reached #6 on the CMJ Jazz Radio Charts and received rave reviews from JazzWeek.com and the All Music Guide Online. This fall, Peter will release his long-awaited debut album, Sioux County on Tapestry Records, which features his compositions and his long-time collaboration with jazz piano legend Art Lande. Peter has performed with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, and has appeared at many jazz festivals throughout the state including the Telluride Jazz Celebration, Jazz in the Sangres and the Vail Jazz Festival

Brian Woestehoff

I grew up in Minneapolis, MN and began my musical education in the third grade with piano lessons, which i kept up for 10 years. I started playing the saxophone at 11, but never paid it much attention until High School, where i began to learn to improvise. From there, i moved on to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, studying with local gurus like John Swana, Chris Farr, and Tony Salicondro. Around the year 2000, i formed the current quartet with Dan Monaghan, Erik Dutko, and Brian Howell. I've since graduated from Uarts, and have spent the time since graduation writing and recording music with the quartet

David Aaron

Born: April 4, 1966

Canadian saxophonist David Aaron regularly works as a freelance musician, as well as a private teacher, composer, arranger and producer and has scored a number of live theater pieces plus numerous films, including two films most recently featured at Cannes.

He was also the creator/producer of the Improv At The Khyber series in Halifax, Canada, which ran in conjunction with the Atlantic Jazz Festival. The series featured internationally-known musicians in an intimate gallery setting.

Paul Ahlstrand

When the hectic summer touring season cools down, things begin to heat up in a cozy Cambridge, MA music venue. On Sunday nights you may find saxophonist Paul Ahlstrand at Toad in Porter Square, leading his stellar quartet through jazz as rich and satisfying as the dark brews on tap at this favorite neighborhood pub. The Sunday night shows have been a welcome wintertime hang for the past few seasons, and now Paul Ahlstrand and quartet have recorded a brilliant new CD titled, appropriately enough, “The Sunday Hang” (Gibraltar Records).

“The Sunday Hang” exhibits a sweet, soulful elegance that evokes at once serious jazz talent and also a casual cool of a very seasoned all-star band. Aside from Ahlstrand on tenor, the band features drummer Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention, Paul McCartney, Elton John), bassist Jesse Williams (Duke Robillard) and pianist Ryan Claunch (Hal Sherfey Band, ex-Groovasaurus). Six of the eight tracks recorded by Nate Dube at Rear Window Studios are Ahlstrand originals and indeed "The Sunday Hang" makes clear that Paul Ahlstrand is a major force as composer, arranger, band leader, and producer.

Ted Hefko

Born: October 5, 1975

Ted Hefko and his band The Thousandaires bring original stories to life with the spontaneity of jazz, the bare-bones sensibility of early folk and the vibrancy of New Orleans. Ted Hefko and The Thousandaires encompasses the full range of his musical experiences and talents, with Ted strumming a guitar while he sings his original lyrics before switching to tenor sax or clarinet for his solos. After several years living in Brooklyn, writing, touring and recording, Ted is happy to once again reside in his musical home: New Orleans, Louisiana. His latest album Distillations of The Blues is playing all over North America and the English speaking world and he’s looking forward to taking his new line-up on tour in 2016. Marcus Wolfe

Born: September 17, 1972

Marcus Wolfe is a saxophonist, composer and educator who lives and works in the Chicago area. He has served as a member of the music faculty at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois where he taught Music Appreciation and directed the Triton College Jazz Ensemble. A native of Missouri, Mr. Wolfe earned his bachelor's degree in music and his master's degree in jazz studies from the University of North Texas. He is currently pursuing a DMA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mr. Wolfe invented the basic dice game while preparing for a proficiency examination during his undergraduate studies

Sean Nowell

Born: May 3, 1973

Sean Nowell is a tenor saxophonist and composer from Birmingham, Alabama steeped in the southern traditions of blues, gospel, jazz, and funk fused with the complex harmonic and world rhythmic concepts that permeate the music of New York City. While in Alabama, he sang in cathedrals with a national touring a cappella choir and was exposed to vocal music from Germany, Eastern Europe, and Africa. He received a BA in Composition from Berklee College of Music in Boston in Jazz Composition and a MA from Manhattan School of Music in New York in Performance. He has composed and improvised film scores, music for ballet and theatre, 20th century classical music, big band, and small jazz ensembles and has pushed the timbral boundaries of the saxophone, flute, bass clarinet, and Udu (Nigerian clay pot drum) by integrating electronic effects pedals with those acoustic instruments

Russ Nolan

Born: April 30, 1968

Consistently voted onto DownBeat magazine’s Rising Star Annual Critics Poll and featured in the 2016 September Indie Life section, Russ Nolan’s music is often described as High-Energy Modern Jazz that both satisfies the intellect of its musical peers and speaks to everyone on a soulful level. Called a ‘renaissance man’ by those close to him, he has taken his experiences in sports, martial arts, business, after-school program volunteering, music education, and other activities to relate to a wider audience. His 2016 release of Sanctuary from the Ordinary – Live at Firehouse 12 was voted onto DownBeat’s Best of 2016

Andrew Lamb

Born: August 26, 1958

ANDREW LAMB (saxophones, flutes) was born in Clinton, North Carolina and grew up in Chicago and in South Jamaica, Queens. Having studied with AACM charter member Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre, Mr. Lamb came into New York’s "avant-garde" community in the ’70s, becoming an active presence in the vibrant Bedford-Stuyvesant arts world at that time, and winning a Brooklyn Arts Council grant. In 1994, he composed all the pieces on his first leader recording, "Portrait in the Mist" (Delmark), which featured vibraphonist Warren Smith, bassist Wilber Morris, and drummer Andrei Strobert. Andrew Lamb has since recorded duets with Warren Smith ("Duet," WISland, ’99 and "The Dogon Duo," Engine Studios, '05) and "Dance of the Prophet," a trio recording with Eugene Cooper and Andrei Strobert (Kiki Records)
